How does an actor get presence? by Michelle Danner
How does an actor get presence? You always hear that this person gave such a performance with presence. How does that happen? Is that something that only certain people possess? That´s a good question. I think it has to do with living your life and how you life your life and your generosity of spirit, who you are as a person, how you deal with stressful situations in your life and how do you come through? Who you are? That´s what gives you presence. I don´t think there is a class that can teach you presence. There is presence in terms of being in the moment and showing up which you can achieve by doing different meditation exercises which is great because that also plugs you into the true part of yourself some real authenticity in yourself but the presence. When you said presence where that took me to is a real person that shows up not like present being in the moment and not thinking about something else which of course that´s important too, but something that extra thing that you walk in with the whole person not just parts of you. Actors, work you put in after you book a role by Michelle Danner
If an actor gets a part, whether it´s a leading role or just a few lines in a play. How much time should they devote to that role outside of rehearsals? Depends what the role is and how challenging it is for them. Sometimes you can overwork something, and sometimes you need to give yourself more rehearsals. So it really depends, it varies with every person and ever project I would say. If that´s what you need to do and if that´s what he needed to do for himself – absolutely. Again it goes back to really knowing yourself really well as an actor and trusting that you have to do what you have to do. Sometimes if you shoot a really difficult scene you can´t be social on set. You have to create a bubble around you. And you have to stay to yourself. I know it´s a little hard if you are a new actor and it all depends on how you do it. But I think that the most important thing is what´s on the screen so whatever it takes to make that performance happen and you know you have to deliver that. You have to know what you have to do in order to get there. What´s an actors best friend and worst enemy in terms of not only their career but also their creativity? by Michelle Danner
What´s an actors best friend and worst enemy in terms of not only their career but also their creativity? Their worst enemy is the insecurity. The insecurity can make you doubt and when you doubt you might not deliver your best work. And your best friend is that you stay hooked up with that part of yourself that has something that wants to say. That part of you that wants to express something emotionally, it´s the why you as an actor choose to be in this profession to begin with. The answer to that why remains continues to be your best friend. The worst enemy obviously is procrastination and not the delay, getting side tracked by life or other things. And the best friend is the willingness to keep expressing yourself, to be playful, because if you embrace the playfulness inside of you, the wonder child – that child in you that wants to play, then you will turn every experience that you have in acting as an actor into something that was just a joy, fun. Teaching acting versus directing actors by Michelle Danner
I think first of all teaching and directing are two different things. And I differentiate them. I try very much not to direct when I teach and when I´m going to do something that feels like a director I´m will tell the students that I´m going to directorial right this minute, but teaching is empowering your students to be able to learn tools and then go out there in the world and the business and have a certain gain of certain independence in their work. So therefore I wanted my students to feel what that freedom feels like in terms of giving adjustments whether I do it as a director or whether I do it as an acting teacher. I think it´s absolutely right. You have to do it in a way… it´s very sensitive and takes a lot of courage. It takes a lot of courage for an actor to get up – whether it´s in front of the camera or on stage and to tell the truth and to open up their vulnerability. It´s not such an easy thing to do. And so here you have somebody that you know becomes critical and potential becomes a negative interject and you know a little gremlin sitting on their shoulder telling them “you´re not doing it right”. In the moment an actor don´t think can hear that. It makes them shutdown, it would make me wanna shutdown. And so that´s why you as much as possible hope to have a collaboration either with a director or have a teacher that is a third eye that gives you that feedback that is you know helps you to elevate you performance and understand that whatever you´re doing can also be there. What an actor should look for when auditing an acting class by Michelle Danner
When a student audits a class, aside from looking at the technique and the teacher, should there also be surveying the mood of the class, what the other peers are like there, so that they can see if they fit? I think the reason to take an acting class, whether it´s in Hollywood or in NY or anywhere in the world is also to join a community and to me always the atmosphere of an acting class is informed by who teaches it. Who´s the leader of the class? Who´s the captain? The same thing like a movie set. Who´s running the ship? And if that person is a person that´s creative and fun then it´s going be fun and if the leader of the boat is somebody that´s afraid, somebody that has a lot of ego, somebody that´s lead by arrogance then it´s going be a tough ride. I´ve taken many classes where the mood is competitive, which ok, that´s the world, the world is competitive but within that I think you wanna form some alliances. In my classes for instances I´ve had several, no so many students that have formed friendships and collaborations that have lasted for entire decades. Students have formed theater companies together and they have made movies together, have written scripts together and that´s the way it should be. You should be able to walk into a class and find people that you can be creative with.
